About James Luc Charles

James Luc Charles, the father of Sir George Charles, contested and won the Micoud/Dennery seat for the SLP in the first General Elections under Adult Suffrage on 12th October 1951. He was later defeated in the 1954 elections by John GM Compton, who though a member of the SLP, contested as an Independent because the SLP would not remove Charles and let him run instead. He in fact beat Charles and three other candidates polling more votes than the three combined. So Dennery is Important in the political history of St. Lucia..the father of the first Chief Minister, George Charles was an MP for that area and it was also the launching pad of the career of the first Premier and PM John Compton. It was his work with the sugar cane workers of Dennery that brought him political prominence.
